Chive Plants – A Taste of History

Chives, an onion family member, have been cherished for centuries for their mild flavour and versatility. Originating in Europe, Asia, and North America, chives were first cultivated for culinary and medicinal purposes. In ancient Chinese medicine, they were used to treat digestive ailments, while the Romans praised them for their ability to soothe sore throats and reduce sunburns.

Similarly, garlic chives, also known as Chinese chives, have a long history rooted in East Asia. Prized for their mild garlic flavour and flat, vibrant green leaves, garlic chives have been a staple in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cuisines for centuries. Ancient Chinese texts highlight their use as both a flavourful herb and a remedy for fatigue, digestive issues, and infections.

Both types of chives have been celebrated for their culinary uses and cultural significance worldwide. While traditional chives add delicate onion notes, garlic chives offer a slightly stronger, garlicky twist, making them versatile for stir-fries, dumplings, and marinades.

Today, these herbs remain favourites for their vibrant green colour, their delicate flowers which are also edible, and for their ability to elevate dishes with subtle yet distinctive flavours. From ancient rituals to modern kitchens, chives and garlic chives connect us to a rich heritage of culinary and medicinal traditions.

Chive Plants – Growing Tips

Growing chives is simple and rewarding. Here’s how to help your chive plants flourish:

  • Sunlight

Chives love sunlight. Select a spot that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  • Soil

Plant in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Chives thrive in a pH range of 6.0–7.0.

  • Spacing

Space chive plants 10–15 cm apart to allow for healthy growth.

  • Pests and Diseases

Chives are naturally pest-resistant but may occasionally encounter aphids or fungal spots.

Chive Plants Companion Planting

Chives make excellent companion plants. They are known to repel pests like aphids and can improve the growth of nearby plants, including tomatoes, carrots, and strawberries. Their mild onion scent can deter harmful insects while benefiting your garden's overall health. For more tips on companion planting with herbs, check out our guide on companion planting.

Chive Plants – Harvesting Guide

Start harvesting once your chive plants are established and about 15 cm tall. Harvest by snipping leaves at the base, leaving at least 2.5 cm of growth to encourage regrowth. Pick chives in the morning and use them fresh for the best flavour.

Fresh chives can be stored in the fridge, wrapped in a damp paper towel, or frozen for long-term use. Regular harvesting ensures a steady supply throughout the growing season.
