Parsley Plants - Glimpse of History
Parsley’s roots run deep in human civilisation's history, with its origins traced back to the Mediterranean region over 2,000 years ago. It was initially valued more as a medicinal plant than a culinary herb. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed parsley had therapeutic properties, using it to treat various ailments, from digestive issues to inflammation.

During the Middle Ages, parsley spread across Europe, where it was grown in monastery gardens and eventually made its way into kitchens throughout the continent. Its hardy nature and ability to grow in various climates made it a staple in medieval cooking. By the 17th century, parsley had become a common sight in herb gardens, and its use in recipes grew, especially in French and Italian cuisine, where it became a foundational herb in dishes like bouquet garni and gremolata.
In Britain, herbalists embraced parsley for its medicinal qualities. It was used to treat everything from kidney problems to insect bites.
Parsley Plants - Growing
Growing parsley is straightforward, but it does have a few preferences.
Here’s how you can help your parsley plants thrive:
-
Sunlight
Parsley loves the sun. Choose a location in your garden that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.
-
Soil
Plant parsley in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter and well-drained. Parsley doesn’t like its roots sitting in water. The ideal pH is 6.0 to 6.8.
-
Spacing
If you're planting multiple parsley plants, space them about 20-25 cm apart to give their roots room to grow.
-
Pests and Diseases
Parsley plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases but keep an eye out for aphids and powdery mildew.
Parsley Plants - Harvesting
When it comes to harvesting parsley, timing is crucial. Start harvesting once the plant has grown enough mature leaves. The more you cut, the more it will grow. For the freshest flavour, pick parsley in the morning. Snip outer leaves close to the base of the plant. Leave the inner stems to grow and produce more leaves. Fresh parsley can be stored in the fridge, in a glass of water, or dried for extended storage.

Keep harvesting throughout the season, and you'll have a steady supply of fresh parsley for your kitchen.
