An airy and graceful perennial with divided fern like leaves and tiny white flowers that are some of the earliest to open each year for nectar loving insects. The flowers are followed by large black seeds.
The leaves have an aniseed scent when crushed are are used when cooking tart fruits like rhubarb to reduce the amount of sugar needed.
Plant in a moist soil in sun or partial shade.
